Living between Hamburg and Berlin, DJ Phono aka Henning Besser started out as a Hip-Hop DJ and music producer at the young age of 15. Born the year disco died, music was a calling of sorts and in 1998 he was awarded European Vice Scratch-champion. After relocating from Rendsburg to Hamburg he discovered the world of electronic music – and the rest you could say is history. Advocating the doctrine “party is my profession”, he can often be found in Hamburg’s famed night spots such as the Pudelclub into the wee hours.Best known for his role as a touring DJ for the Hanseatic Hip-Hop band Deichkind with electro leanings, he is also responsible for orchestrating the live shows as artistic director for the group. Identifiable by their outrageous outfits, unique stage presence and embrace of ‘tech-rap’, Phono complimented the group with his turntable skills and techno vibes. Existing on the border of pop and high culture has given Phono a fresh perspective and he uses this approach as a conceptual artist. With his partner Philipp Grütering, he runs the Deichkind label Sultan Günther Music and continues to make his own music released on the Hamburg label Diynamic, while also realizing projects like his daft punk cover band. After many requests to hear his recent Fusion Festival set again and without a recording, DJ Phono has put together a mixtape as an ode to this performance packed into just under an hour. Featuring artists such as DJ Koze and Daniel Bortz, it is sure to get your hips moving.
