We’ve got another mixed bag of links from the FvF team that’ll give you an idea of some of the cultural influences that float around the office. Get to know the works of Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Lawrence Durrell, George A Romero and Kilo Kish through these reads.

Links

    • 1 Night of the Living Dead filmmaker, George A Romero died this past weekend. His lo-fi approach to filmmaking sowed the seeds for independent cinema and challenged race, politics, war and religion in times before these discussions were major subjects in film. The Guardian honors the filmmaker in this retrospective.
    • 2 While film may have suffered a loss, it gains something old: Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf released his film The Nights of Zayandeh-Rood in 1990 but it was so heavily censored by the Iranian Government that it was barely recognizable. The film, chronicling the Iranian Revolution, is finally getting exposure outside of Iran and finding new audiences. Reorient takes a look at the film’s proper release, 30 years delayed.
    • 3 A young Lawrence Durrell, enamored by the tremendous Tropic of Cancer, writes a fan letter to an older, established Henry Miller. What ensues is a correspondence that lasted years and saw the two exchanging volumes of letters, watercolors and manuscripts. The Paris Review has published some of these letters.
    • 4 The Travel Almanac spoke with the polymathic Kilo Kish about her move from New York to L.A. and the immeasurable differences between the two cities.
    • 5 In the event of a global catastrophe (maybe zombie apocalypse a la George Romero?) how will humanity rebuild civilization? The New York Times has a photo essay of the seed vaults around the world that act as safeguards against human extinction.

Hopefully you enjoyed the reads from this week’s Link List, but if you’ve still got an internet itch to scratch, you can find more here.
